Friends and Colleagues,

I’d like to share with you some recent publications from ICANN’s Office of the CTO (OCTO).

ICANN’s Root Name Service Strategy and Implementation

This document describes, at a high level, the ICANN organization’s strategy and implementation plans for the ICANN Managed Root Server (IMRS). The strategy has two goals, which are associated with its implementation plans.

The goals of the IMRS strategy are:

  * Supporting the Internet community by placing root server instances in diverse locations
  * Protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the root server system during attack

You can access the document here >> https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/octo-016-26oct20-en.pdf.

If you have any feedback, comments, or input to make, you can do so via the public comments window here >> https://www.icann.org/public-comments/root-name-service-implementation-2020-10-27-en

New IP

Although New IP can use a new variable length addressing type, IPv4, IPv6, or any combination of the above, it cannot be compatible with the existing deployed IPv4- or IPv6-based infrastructure. As such, New IP would have to be deployed in parallel with the current Internet infrastructure, interconnecting via gateways. Any significant deployment would probably face decades-long timelines.

You can find this document here >> https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/octo-017-27oct20-en.pdf.

Identifier Technology Health Indicators (ITHI)

You can learn more about this project and its updates in this blog >> https://www.icann.org/news/blog/what-ithi-can-tell-us-about-resolver-concentration. This blog covers some findings from research conducted on recursive resolvers.

You can find the ITHI website here >> https://ithi.research.icann.org/.

If you have any questions, or would like to get more insights from one of my colleagues who are SMEs on the different topics above, happy to arrange for one.

Thank you,

Fahd Batayneh
